Have you noticed the sound of booms and bangs on the roof lately? Being selective about where you park your car? You are indeed under siege by the native nut trees of North Carolina. You can east these nuts!! The Carnival of Nuts is a family friendly event that aims to teach and inspire you to engage with the incredibly nutritious world of native nuts that is raining down all around you! Featuring carnival games, nut sampling, a raffle, door prizes and a fly over by the Goodyear blimp dressed as a pecan. The stage boasts chestnut expert Bob Stehli, Vice President of the Northern Nut Growers Association, poetry and skits, the medicinal value of nuts, and more! We will have demonstrations on the ancient art of acorn and hickory processing. Kids and adults alike will marvel at the nutty performance art. The Buncombe Fruit Nuts have been hard at work collecting local delicacies such as hickory and black walnuts, pawpaw, persimmon and chestnuts and distributing them to West End Bakery, The Hop, French Broad Chocolates, Riverbend Malthouse and Raw Shakti Chocolate to create a spread of fantastic food and libations highlighting these ingredients. All proceeds from the event go directly to buying fruit and nut trees to be planted at schools, community gardens and public places. The Buncombe Fruit and Nut Club is an all-volunteer club dedicated to caring for and planting fruit and nut trees in and around Asheville, NC.
This event is a community collaboration of Transition Asheville, Slow Food Asheville, West End Bakery, The Hop, French Broad Chocolates, Riverbend Malthouse and Raw Shakti Chocolate and the Buncombe Fruit and Nut Club.
